Applicants applying for General Insurance licenses as an employee or independent contractor of a licensed agency must be recommended by the General Level 3 Designated Representative.

General Insurance - Probationary Agent

Probationary General license allows a new person to act as an agent prior to completing the Level 1 agent exam, through an agency or insurer. The license is valid for 90 days and can only be issued once. It cannot be renewed.

  • Must be sponsored by the Designated Representative.
  • Must provide a current criminal check that was conducted within 3 months from AIC receiving the paid and approved application.
  • Under ongoing supervision of the holder of a Level 2 or Level 3 Designated Representative license, in accordance with standards established by the Level 3 DR.
  • Must have an Errors & Omissions policy issued by a licensed insurer in Alberta that meets the terms and conditions approved by AIC; the policy must be issued in the name of the business and provide coverage for the employees and independent contractors of the business who hold certificates of authority

If you are a resident of Alberta:

To obtain a General Level 1 license as a resident of Alberta, you must:

  • Obtain a General Licensing Qualification Program certificate by an approved education provider
  • Pass the General Level 1 qualifying exam with the Alberta Insurance Council
  • Provide proof of passing the exam within the previous 12 months from AIC receiving your paid and approved application

Note: If an individual re-applies within 24 months (2 years) from the last time they last held an active license in the same class, they are exempt from re-qualifying for and re-writing the exams. The AIC must receive paid and approved applications within those 24 months.

If you are a non-resident or new to Alberta:

An individual is eligible to apply for a license as non-Alberta resident without having to write and pass our provincial exams if they hold an active license that is equivalent to Alberta’s.

If you are new to the province and have held an insurance license from another home jurisdiction equivalent to Alberta’s in the last 12 months from AIC receiving your approved and paid application, you may be eligible for a license without having to write and pass our provincial exams.

If you are applying based on course equivalencies

Alberta residents and non-residents may apply for a General Level 1 license based on General course equivalencies (CIP or CAIB courses).

Ensure you provide AIC-required proof of general course equivalencies to a Level 1 license with your application.

Students are required to pass the General Level 1 exam before applying.

Exams marks are only valid for 12 months. AIC must receive the approved and paid application (status: Under Review with AIC) within 12 months from the applicant passing the required exam.

New or renewal – $95

General Insurance – Level 3

The General Level 3 is only for someone who meets the experience and educational eligibility requirements to apply as the General Designated Representative (DR) of an agency. There can only be one DR per business and per insurance class.

DR responsibilities:
1) managing and supervising the business, including establishing appropriate standards relating to the supervision of persons who hold a General Probationary or a General Level 1 license
2) approving online applications for individuals applying for Probationary, General Level 1, and General Level 2 licenses
3) completing and submitting renewal applications on time
4) maintaining and updating E&O information under the corporate license and under all issued licenses under the business

Individuals applying for General Level 3 must intend to either:

  • license a new business (agency/brokerage) or
  • replace a Designated Representative of a licensed business.

They also:

  • Must provide a current criminal check that was conducted within 3 months from AIC receiving the paid and approved application
  • Must have an Errors & Omissions policy issued by a licensed insurer in Alberta that meets the terms and conditions approved by AIC; the policy must be issued in the name of the business and provide coverage for the employees and independent contractors of the business who hold certificates of authority

To apply for a corporate license to license a business in Alberta, the individual applying as the DR must complete applications to license the business. When the licenses are issued, a personal license will be issued to the individual to act as an insurance agent in Alberta and a corporate license will be issued to the business for the business to act as an insurance agent in Alberta.

Online applications for insurance agencies and their DRs must be submitted to the agent’s recommending insurer/sponsor before they can be reviewed and processed by AIC.

  • Within the previous 36 months, have held a General Level 2 license for a period of at least 24 months;
  • Either pass the General Level 3 exam within the previous 12 months or meet the General course equivalencies required for a Level 3 license

Note: If an individual re-applies within 24 months (2 years) from the last time they last held an active license in the same class, they are exempt from re-writing the exams. The AIC must receive paid and approved applications within those 24 months.

If you are a non-resident:

To be eligible as the General Designated Representative (Level 3) in Alberta, an agent must meet the education and experience requirement set in Legislation by fulfilling one of the following criteria:

  • Being the Designated Representative of an agency in their home jurisdiction (e.g. Officer Responsible, Principal Broker, Agent in Charge, Nominee, etc.);

or

  • Writing and passing the AIC General Level 3 exam within 12 months of AIC receiving the paid and approved application;

or

Applicants must have also held the equivalent to the General Level 2 license in Alberta for at least two of the past three years to meet the experience requirement.

Completing a prerequisite course is not a mandatory requirement to register for a General Level 3 exam. However, there are education providers who can help you prepare for a General Level 3 exam if you’re interested.

New or renewal – $95
To apply to both sets of licenses (both personal and corporate): $190

FAQs

1. Log into the AIC Portal with your CIPR# or email address and password.
2. Click the green “Active Licenses” button.
3. Click “Apply for a License” in the top right of the screen.

  • Select “I am applying for myself”
  • Select the license class as per your sponsorship contract (e.g. general insurance probationary agent; general insurance – level 1; general insurance – level 2).
  • If applying to represent a licensed agency: enter the business name (start typing the business name and select from drop-down list).
  • Click the blue “Continue” button.
  • Click “Yes” to create application.

4. Fully complete each section of the application.

  • Read and answer all questions from 1 to 10. If any questions are answered “yes,” enter the information in the box provided and provide an attachment (if required).
  • Click “Save Application” after each section as you complete your application.

5. Under the “Payment Option,” select “you are paying”; the fees will automatically be added to an invoice. We only accept Visa or Mastercard as payment methods and do not accept Visa Debit or Mastercard Debit payments.
6. Once the application is complete, click the green “Submit Application” button at the bottom of the application and a declaration box will pop up for you to complete.
7. Once approved by the sponsor (Designated Representative) and the fees have been paid, the application will be submitted to the Alberta Insurance Council for final review.

Note: A current criminal check will not be required if you are reinstating a license (re-applying in the same term).
