Adjuster Level 1

Adjuster Level 3/Adjuster Level 3 Designated Representative

Adjuster license applicants may apply as an employee or independent contractor of an agency/firm and must be recommended by the licensed Designated Representative of that firm.

Adjusters who are employees of licensed insurance companies are exempt from requiring an adjuster license in Alberta.

Important info about Adjuster licenses:

If the license is to be issued in the name of a firm, the adjusting firm must be licensed in Alberta before you may apply to represent that firm. You must comply with the Alberta Insurance Act requirement that you carry on business in Alberta in the business name in which you are licensed.

If you wish to represent more than one business, the Insurance Act requires that you obtain a separate Adjuster’s license for each business that you wish to represent. Each of those licenses requires a new application and submitting the appropriate fees.

Businesses offering adjusting services from multiple office spaces must have at least one Level 2 adjuster in each office.

Adjuster Level 1 license

  • Must be recommended by the licensed Designated Representative of their firm.
  • Must provide a current criminal check that was conducted within 3 months from AIC receiving the approved application.
  • Must have an Errors & Omissions policy issued by a licensed insurer in Alberta that meets the terms and conditions approved by AIC; the policy must be issued in the name of the business and provide coverage for the employees and independent contractors of the business who hold certificates of authority
  • Under ongoing direct supervision of the holder of an Adjuster Level 3 license and that all reports in relation to the adjustment of claims by the holder of the Level 1 license be approved and countersigned by the holder of an Adjuster Level 3 license

Note: New applicants for a restricted Hail, Equipment Warranty, and Travel Adjusters license are not required to provide proof of educational requirements or pass any exam with AIC.

On behalf of the Industry Councils, AIC issued Notices to the Profession regarding Potential Occupations at Conflict with Duties of an Insurance Intermediary and Voluntary Undertaking Agreements.

It is important that all individuals intending to take an insurance qualification course, register for an insurance exam, or apply for a license—especially those who currently hold another occupation—read these notices as they contain important information about criteria that may result in processing delays for applications or the denial of a license.

There is no education prerequisites required to write the Adjuster Level 1 exam. However, there are education providers who can help you prepare for a Adjuster Level 1 exam if you’re interested.

If you are a resident of Alberta:

To obtain an Adjuster Level 1 license as a resident of Alberta, you must write the Alberta Adjuster Level 1 exam and provide proof of passing. AIC must receive your paid and approved application within 12 months from passing the exam.

If an individual re-applies within 24 months (2 years) from the last time they last held an active license in the same class, they are exempt from re-qualifying and re-writing the exams. AIC must receive the paid and approved applications within those 24 months.

If you are a non-resident or new to Alberta:

An individual is eligible to apply for a license as non-Alberta resident without having to write and pass our provincial exams if they hold an active license that is equivalent to Alberta’s.

If they are applying for an adjuster license in Alberta, they must provide proof they hold an adjuster license without restrictions, as a licensed adjuster is able to adjust any type of claim in Alberta. Regardless of the level of adjuster license an individual holds in another jurisdiction, it will only be equivalent to an Adjuster Level 1 in Alberta.

If you are new to the province and have held an insurance license from another home jurisdiction equivalent to Alberta’s in the last 12 months from AIC receiving your approved and paid application, you may be eligible for a license without having to write and pass our provincial exams.

Exams marks are only valid for 12 months. AIC must receive approved and paid application within 12 months from the applicant passing the required exam (i.e. the application status must be “Under Review with AIC”) .

New or renewal – $95
Change (transfer) or reinstatement – $25

Adjuster Level 2 license

  • Successfully completed six courses from the Insurance Institute of Canada for a designation as an Associate of the Insurance Institute of Canada; one of those courses must be C-15 (Loss Adjustment and Claims Settlements), C-17 (Claims 1), or C-110 (Essentials of Loss Adjusting) or courses that are equivalent.

If you are a non-resident or new to Alberta:

Non-Alberta residents can obtain a Adjuster Level 2 license by meeting the following qualifications:

  • Hold an Adjuster license that is equivalent to an Adjuster Level 1 in Alberta. Regardless of the level of adjuster license an individual holds in another jurisdiction, it will only be equivalent to an Adjuster Level 1 in Alberta.

  • Be an Associate or Fellow of the Insurance Institute of Canada or hold a  Chartered Insurance Professional or a Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional designation;
  • Successfully completed the C-32 (Bodily Injury Claims) course;
  • Completion of one of the C-46 (Claims 2), C-41 (Property Loss Adjustment), or C-111 (Advanced Loss Adjusting) courses from the Insurance Institute of Canada (or courses that are equivalent); and
  • Have at least 60 months of adjuster experience within the 10-year period immediately preceding the date of application.

If you are a non-resident or new to Alberta:

Non-Alberta residents can obtain a Adjuster Level 3 license by meeting the following qualifications:

  • Hold a current Adjuster license;
  • Meet the educational and experience requirements for an Adjuster Level 2;
  • Be an Associate or Fellow of the Insurance Institute of Canada or hold a Chartered Insurance Professional or a Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional designation;
  • Successfully completed the C-32 (Bodily Injury Claims) course;
  • Completion of one of the C-46 (Claims 2), C-41 (Property Loss Adjustment), or C-111 (Advanced Loss Adjusting) courses from the Insurance Institute of Canada (or courses that are equivalent); and
  • Have at least 60 months of adjuster experience within the 10-year period immediately preceding the date of application.

Note: Applicants with more than 10 years insurance adjusting experience prior to 1990 and who are not an Associate or Fellow of the Insurance Institute of Canada should send an email to licensing@abcouncil.ab.ca for further instructions.

FAQs about Adjuster licenses

No. The listed IIC courses are part of the eligibility requirements, and they are set by Legislation. AIC cannot waive or modify them.

If you believe you have completed courses that are equivalent to the ones listed as requirements, you should provide a letter from the Insurance Institute of Canada (IIC) confirming that the courses you completed are considered equivalent to the courses that the Alberta Insurance Adjusters’ Council has approved to be equivalent. As the IIC is not the delegated authority to approve courses for an Adjuster Level 3 license in Alberta, their letter may or may not support your request.

Once that letter is provided, we will send your file to be reviewed by the Insurance Adjusters’ Council, as delegated by the President of Treasury Board and Minister of Finance.

 

 

Only a FSRA Probationary license is equivalent to an Adjuster Level 1 license. If you are applying based on a FSRA Letter of Authority, you must attach a PDF of your official IIC transcript as proof of passing C11, C12, C14, and C17 or C110 under question 1 or 3 of your application. Please keep in mind that these courses cannot be granted.

1. Log into the AIC Portal with your CIPR# or email address and password.
2. Click the green “Active Licenses” button.
3. Click “Apply for a License” in the top right of the screen.

  • Select “I am applying for myself”
  • Select the license class as per your sponsorship contract (e.g. Adjuster Level 1).
  • Enter the business name (start typing the business name and select from drop-down list).
  • Click the blue “Continue” button.
  • Click “Yes” to create application.

4. Fully complete each section of the application.

  • Read and answer all questions from 1 to 10. If any questions are answered “yes,” enter the information in the box provided and provide an attachment (if required).
  • Answer “yes” to question 1 of the application that asks, Have you completed any of the CIP (AIIC)/FCIP (FIIC) courses from the Insurance Institute of Canada?” and attach a PDF of your official IIC transcript and CIP or FCIP designation, if applicable. The document must indicate your name and the courses taken.
  • Click “Save Application” after each section as you complete your application.

5. Under the “Payment Option,” select “you are paying”; the fees will automatically be added to an invoice. We only accept Visa or Mastercard as payment methods and do not accept Visa Debit or MasterCard Debit payments.
6. Once the application is complete, click the green “Submit Application” button at the bottom of the application and a declaration box will pop up for you to complete.
7. Once approved by the sponsor (Designated Representative) and the fees have been paid, the application will be submitted to the Alberta Insurance Council for final review.

Note: A current criminal check will not be required if you are reinstating a license (re-applying in the same term).

  • Select “I am applying for myself”
  • Select the license class as per your sponsorship contract (e.g. Adjuster Level 2).

5. Select yes” to I am changing one or more of the following: (license level, agency, sponsoring company, personal name).” This will ensure that your application fees are set as $25.

6. Select from the drop-down menu under “original license number” the license you intend to transfer/upgrade. Then click the blue “Continue” button and click “yes” to create application.

7. Fully complete each section of the application.

  • Read and answer all questions from 1 to 10. If any questions are answered yes, enter the information in the box and provide an attachment (if required).
  • If you are upgrading, answer “yes” to question 1 of the application that asks, “Have you completed any of the CIP (AIIC)/FCIP (FIIC) courses from the Insurance Institute of Canada?” and attach a PDF of your official IIC transcript and your CIP or FCIP designation, if applicable. The document must indicate your name and the courses taken.
  • If you are changing your name, ensure you have changed your name under your CIPR profile before completing this application. Then, answer “yes” to question 3 that asks, “Have you been licensed in Alberta or elsewhere?” Indicate that you are changing your name and upload proof of name change (e.g. government-issued ID such as driver’s license, marriage certificate, etc.).
  • Click “Save Application” after each section as you complete your application.

8. Under the “Payment Option,” select “you are paying”; the fees will automatically be added to an invoice. We only accept Visa or Mastercard as payment methods and do not accept Visa Debit or MasterCard Debit payments.
9. Once the application is complete, click the green “Submit Application” button at the bottom of the application and a declaration box will pop up for you to complete.
