Notice regarding TruStar Underwriting
- AIC updates
AIC has received notice that Trustar is being investigated by Ontario for a series of alleged schemes and is working to determine if any Alberta consumers were also affected.
To Alberta insurance brokers and clients of TruStar Underwriting Inc. (“TruStar”):
The Alberta Insurance Council (AIC) received notice in late December 2024 that TruStar Underwriting Inc. was being investigated by the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario for a series of alleged schemes in which TruStar has purportedly bound risks and collected premiums when in fact no such coverage has been bound. AIC is currently determining if any Alberta consumers were affected and to what extent.
TruStar is licensed with AIC in Alberta and is licensed in other jurisdictions as an agency.
Brokers and clients should carefully review any business dealings they have had with TruStar and verify that any policies are confirmed in writing by the insurer on risk as having been bound and premium paid. Contact your broker if you have concerns regarding your insurance policy or require assistance in obtaining proper coverage if coverage is found to not currently be in place.
As part of its work to protect Alberta consumers, AIC investigates complaints against insurance agents, brokers, and independent adjusters. AIC licensees and/or Alberta consumers who have been involved in an invalid insurance transaction with TruStar may make a complaint using our Make a Complaint form.
