Insurance exams overview

Before you can apply for a license in Alberta, you must either pass the required exam or hold an active license that is equivalent to Alberta’s in another jurisdiction.

What do I need to write an exam?

  1. A CIPR number is required to register for an exam.
  2. Register online for an exam sitting. Click here for a complete listing of times and locations. Only Visa and Mastercard are accepted as payment methods for exam fees.
  3. In-person exams in Calgary and Edmonton are on computers provided by AIC. You must have your CIPR# or CIPR email address and password to log in and start your exam.

  4. A scientific calculator is provided within the exam platform. You are encouraged to review this scientific calculator so you are familiar with all the features.
  5. Exam writers must bring government-issued photo identification (e.g. valid driver’s license, passport, permanent resident card).

Important Exam Information

  • Exam writers must arrive 15 minutes before the exam start time to check in and to avoid forfeiting their exam fee.
  • Once the exam has started, late arrivals will not be admitted into the exam room; anyone who arrives late to an exam will forfeit their exam fee.
  • Cell phones and other wireless devices are not permitted and must be checked at the door. No outside supplies or refreshments are allowed.
  • Washroom breaks are not allowed while an exam is in session.
  • If you have medical or other conditions that require special consideration, please inform us by email before registering. There will be no exceptions to this requirement at normal examination sittings.
  • Exam results for Calgary and Edmonton are typically available online within 24 hours. For cities outside of Calgary and Edmonton, exam results can take up to five business days to be posted.
  • A minimum of 60% is required to pass the LLQP exams. A minimum of 70% is required to pass all other exams (General exams and Adjuster Level 1).
  • You can write an exam up to three times, with each attempt subject to rewrite fees. After a third attempt, a six-month waiting period is imposed. This six-month waiting period is then imposed after each additional attempt.

Exam FAQs

  1. Log into your AIC profile using your CIPR number or CIPR email address.
  2. Click on “Exams” on the left-hand menu bar, then “Register for an Exam.”
  3. Select the exam type you wish to take and the location you would like to write at.
  4. Click “Get Schedules” and select the date you would like to write.
  5. Complete your declarations.
  6. Pay the exam fee to guarantee your sitting (only Visa and Mastercard are accepted online).

Exams in the these cities are in-person and paper-based. You will be provided with an exam question booklet, a Scantron sheet to record your answers on, and, if you are taking an LLQP exam, a tablet with the approved reference materials.

Exams outside of Calgary and Edmonton are subject to additional proctoring fees. Please see the exam schedules and locations for location-specific information.

If you’ve written an exam or been issued a license anytime after August 2013, you will have a CIPR number.

If you have forgotten your CIPR email address, CIPR number, or password, you can reset your password and get a reminder of your email address by visiting the CIPR website.

If you’ve never had a CIPR number and need one, visit the CIPR website to register. Your name and date of birth registered with CIPR must match the photo identification that you will bring with you when you write the exam.

You can register for an exam sitting up to 30 days in advance.

Examination registrations are based on availability up to the day of the examination.

Examinations must be rescheduled at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled examination in order to avoid forfeiting examination fees.

Those who leave the exam room during the course of an exam, regardless of the reason, must turn in their exam and it will be scored as submitted.

Yes. If you wish to reschedule, you must do so online more than 24 hours before your exam is scheduled or you forfeit your exam fees. Log into your AIC profile, go to your scheduled exams, and click the “Reschedule” button under “Actions.” You can reschedule your exams up to three times for no cost; however a full exam fee will be charged after the third reschedule.
