Insurance exams overview

Before you can apply for a license in Alberta, you must either pass the required exam or hold an active license that is equivalent to Alberta’s in another jurisdiction.

What do I need to write an exam?

  1. A CIPR number is required to register for an exam.
  2. Register online for an exam sitting. Click here for a complete listing of times and locations. Only Visa and Mastercard are accepted as payment methods for exam fees.
  3. In-person exams in Calgary and Edmonton are on computers provided by AIC. You must have your CIPR# or CIPR email address and password to log in and start your exam.

  4. A scientific calculator is provided within the exam platform. You are encouraged to review this scientific calculator so you are familiar with all the features.
  5. Exam writers must bring government-issued photo identification (e.g. valid driver’s license, passport, permanent resident card).

Important Exam Information

  • Exam writers must arrive 15 minutes before the exam start time to check in and to avoid forfeiting their exam fee.
  • Once the exam has started, late arrivals will not be admitted into the exam room; anyone who arrives late to an exam will forfeit their exam fee.
  • Cell phones and other wireless devices are not permitted and must be checked at the door. No outside supplies or refreshments are allowed.
  • Washroom breaks are not allowed while an exam is in session.
  • If you have medical or other conditions that require special consideration, please inform us by email before registering. There will be no exceptions to this requirement at normal examination sittings.
  • Exam results for Calgary and Edmonton are typically available online within 24 hours. For cities outside of Calgary and Edmonton, exam results can take up to five business days to be posted.
  • A minimum of 60% is required to pass the LLQP exams. A minimum of 70% is required to pass all other exams (General exams and Adjuster Level 1).
  • You can write an exam up to three times, with each attempt subject to rewrite fees. After a third attempt, a six-month waiting period is imposed. This six-month waiting period is then imposed after each additional attempt.
