Life Insurance licenses

Please be aware that Life and Accident & Sickness licenses are two different license classes in Alberta and are two separate licenses. If you intend to sell Group, Critical Illness or Disability insurance in addition to Life, you will need to apply for both licenses.

If you want to sell policies that have components of both Life and Accident & Sickness coverage, you must hold both licenses.

Educational requirements

After completing the mandatory Life License Qualifying Program (LLQP), new applicants are required to pass provincial LLQP exams. Then, the AIC must receive your paid and approved applications within 12 months of you passing the provincial exams.

When the applicant completes their LLQP program, the course provider will enter their certification under the applicant’s CIPR profile. A certification is valid for 1 year.

Once certified, the applicant must, within 1 year from the certification, log into the AIC Portal and register for the provincial LLQP exams. If the LLQP program certificate expires, they cannot register for the provincial exams.

All applicants must also satisfy the requirements set out on the Applying for a license page.
