Renewals made easy: Get ready to renew your insurance license this May
As the Alberta Insurance Council (AIC)’s annual license renewal period approaches, the AIC would like to remind all insurance agents, brokers, and independent adjusters of the key dates and requirements for renewing your licenses. The renewal period begins on May 1, 2025, and all licenses issued before this date must be renewed by June 30, 2025. If you do not renew your license by June 30, you will no longer be authorized to conduct insurance business in Alberta.
Tips for renewing your license
To ensure a smooth renewal process and avoid any disruptions in your ability to conduct insurance business in Alberta, here are the AIC’s top tips for renewing your license:
- Stay ahead with accurate information: Keeping a current and up-to-date profile on both CIPR and the AIC Portal helps ensure your license can be efficiently renewed without delays.
- Avoid the last-minute scramble: Renewing early gives the AIC more time to review and address additional requirements before the deadline date of June 30. Late applications may cause a period in which your license is inactive while the application is being reviewed.
- Stay on top of your CE credits: A minimum of 15 hours of approved Continuing Education (CE) credits are required for each class of license being renewed. Before you renew your license, ensure all your CE credits are completed and entered into your AIC CE record.
- If you still need CE credits, you can use AIC’s CE Course Lookup to find accredited courses.
- Visit AIC’s Continuing Education page to get more information about CE requirements and what qualifies for CE Exemptions.
Special note for new license applicants: If you are applying for a new license and wish to receive a license with a June 30, 2026 expiry date, please hold off submitting your application until May 1, 2025 or afterwards.
Changes that can affect the renewal process
When you renew your license, it is to renew the exact same license you currently hold. If you intend to change anything—such as your personal name, agency, or sponsor—you must complete a new application. Do not complete the normal renewal process.
For more information and answers to frequently asked questions about renewals, visit the Annual License Renewal page. If you have further questions about the renewal process, please contact licensing@abcouncil.ab.ca and include your CIPR number and license number in the subject of the email.
